Women with low vitamin D levels had a 94 percent chance the cancer would spread through the body, ten years after diagnosis
Vitamin D levels and mortality of breast cancers among women are directly related, according to a Canadian study released by the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
According to the study, women diagnosed with breast cancer and low vitamin D levels have twice the chance of disease spreading through his body and 73 percent more likely to die from cancer than women with high amounts of the vitamin.
In the more northern countries of the world-including Canada-a lack of vitamin D is endemic due to the few hours of sunshine during the long winters. The lack of sunlight prevents the body naturally produces vitamin through contact of skin with ultraviolet rays.
The data collected by Canadian scientists say that just one in four women in the country have adequate amounts of vitamin. By age, younger women are the ones that have lower levels because they do not consume vitamin supplements in the same amount as most adult women.
The study was conducted in hospitals in Toronto and the authors continued for over a decade, 512 women diagnosed with breast cancer between 1989 and 1995. All patients were diagnosed with cancer in its early stages, focusing on the breasts, and with an average age of 50.
The group of women with the lowest mortality levels had a form of vitamin D between 80 and 120 nanomoles per liter. The mole is the molecular weight of a substance expressed in grams. NANOMOL is a billionth of a mole.
The study said the average content of vitamin D among women tested was 58 nanomoles per liter.

A decade after the detection of breast cancer 85 percent of women with adequate vitamin D levels survived.
