The search for more effective treatments for mesothelioma is ongoing. There is no cure for mesothelioma. Standard applications that attempt to slow the progression of this disease are:
* Surgery – to remove part of all body tissues affected
* Radiation therapy – to target and kill the mesothelioma cells
* Chemotherapy is injected – using drugs or taken orally, to kill or inhibit tumor cell growth
Types of mesothelioma
Mesothelioma can attack the pleural lining around the lungs. It is also the peritoneum, the tissue around the gut. Mesothelioma can attack the stomach lining, other internal organs, or even the pericardium (the sac tissue of the heart). Thus, mesothelioma can be generally classified into the following categories:
* Pleural – of mesothelioma cases 75%
* Peritoneal - 10% -20%
* Effusion – 5%
Mesothelioma is also grouped by type of cancer rather than the location of the tumor:
* Epithelioid – most common, best survival rate
* Sarcomatous – most severe, but more rare
* Mixed / biphasic – a mixture of epithelial and sarcomatous cancer
