Eating too little fish, fruit and vegetables is as bad for your health as smoking, according to a study released by the public health agency in Holland.
The study, which the European Food Safety Agency says it will use when analyzing the risks of food and diet, found that of all dietary factors insufficient consumption of fish, fruit and vegetables causes most cases of serious illness and deaths in the Netherlands.
Taking into account not just deaths that occur and years with poorer quality of life by a serious illness, unhealthy eating habits cause as much health loss as snuff, said the National Institute Dutchman for Public Health and Environment.
Unhealthy diet reduces the average life expectancy for a Dutchman in 40 years by 1.2 years, while obesity claims 0.8 years.
