It is increasingly common for women to premiere as mothers between 30 and 40. Previously, this might be rare, as almost all began to have children in the twenties. But life has changed and there are several factors influencing motherhood at an older age. Find out how age affects pregnancy, do not stop reading.

It happens that the divorce rate is higher, and although some women are married at twenty to thirty something when they have already been divorced and are ready for another serious relationship that leads to being mothers.

It is then the question arises can I be a mother after 35? Medically this number is an indicator of risk and the odds of getting pregnant. However, there is an obstacle to being a mother.

What happens after 35? While it is possible to get pregnant, your body is no longer the same.

From age 30 your fertility is reduced because your eggs are fewer and lower quality. This coupled with hormonal changes that affect the frequency of ovulation and make evenings longer to get pregnant.
As the years pass there is an increasing possibility of complications during pregnancy. For example, gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, etc..

With age, they also increase the risk that the baby has birth defects or congenital malformations.
Furthermore, the chances of cesarean need increasing.

It also increases the risk of abortion due to chromosomal abnormalities or anomalies (of chromosomes).
Prenatal controls are stricter and you may undergo tests to detect potential problems or abnormalities.
But while this may be discouraged, do not! The truth is that the actual fertility of each woman depends very much on their health in general. So having 35 means nothing if you bring a healthy lifestyle. So, it seems important to note that most babies are born healthy despite the mother’s age and excluding chromosomal abnormalities, many studies indicate that the risks of birth defects in babies of mothers are not more mature the babies of young mothers.

Being a mother after 35 years also has its advantages, as it has been shown that women of this age are much more aware of having a healthy lifestyle and are in tune with your body. That is, eat better and know that physical activity is essential for a healthy life. In addition, studies suggest that women over 35 are more tolerant annoying pregnancy symptoms and feel more secure at the time of delivery. Not to mention that at that point in their lives, many women between 30 and 40 years and know what they want, have achieved many goals and are ready to devote himself entirely to the adventure of motherhood.

So if you’re over 35 and want to have a baby, go! Check with your doctor and never forget to prenatal care.

How can you tell if an abortion or bleeding is normal?

The first symptom of spontaneous abortion is precisely the bleeding or vaginal bleeding, although some women may lose a little blood or soiled underwear in early pregnancy without losing. If it is a spontaneous abortion, usually begins after bleeding, pain in the abdomen, intermittent or persistent, mild or intense pain. You may also feel pain and pressure in the lower back.

The combination of bleeding and pain are not very positive signs, so you should consult your doctor immediately or quickly go to a medical facility. These two symptoms also occur in the case of an ectopic pregnancy (or molar). This means that the egg is attached and has been developing outside the uterus, usually in the fallopian tubes. Unfortunately, this type of pregnancy can not come to term and if not treated early, the mother is in great danger.

We must be cautious and act in time

If you feel out of the ordinary or have any questions, you have to go immediately to the doctor to determine what to do. If there is suspicion that the pain and bleeding announced an ectopic pregnancy, an ultrasound tell the doctor immediately. If the ultrasound shows no problems, but the pregnancy continues to make losses, however small, need to have more ultrasound tests in the following weeks.

The doctor may also indicate other procedures:
a) If already in the second quarter and the ultrasound shows that the neck of the uterus (cervix) is opening or shortening, the doctor may recommend cervical cerclage, which is to close the cervix with points to help prevent abortion or premature labor.
b) If the doctor is inclined to think that this is a possible spontaneous abortion, will recommend bed rest, but there is no guarantee that this will contain it. Might suggest also refrain from sex while in pain or bleeding. Although some people think that sex can cause an abortion, that is not true in pregnancy where everything goes well, but it is recommended that the couple abstain until everything returns to normal.
c) If the pain and bleeding continue and worsen to the point you start to drive embryonic tissue (gray color), placenta or clots, the doctor may recommend a suction curettage or dilation and curettage. In this case of very large hemorrhage or signs of infection the doctor will recommend this procedure immediately, especially if abortion is not the first of the patient, to analyze the tissue and confirm whether there is a genetic cause.

After completion of the transaction, which is usually done on an outpatient basis (which need not remain in the hospital), the woman may feel pain similar to menstrual cramps for a day or two. The bleeding will continue for one or two weeks and recommended the use of pads (not tampons). For pain relief, you can use ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Not recommended or sex (as there is more risk of infections until you completely close the cervix), or the use of douches, until it stops bleeding. If on the contrary it increases to the point of saturating a pad in an hour, if symptoms of infection (fever, vaginal discharge or odor), you must seek medical help quickly. If bleeding is very heavy and you feel weak, dizzy, nauseous and may be in shock and need urgent medical attention. To call the local emergency number or someone must take immediately to the emergency room of the nearest hospital (women should not drive a vehicle to the hospital itself).

Then what can you expect?

After the pain of loss, a very intense and frustrating, no matter the duration of pregnancy, the woman’s normal to feel anxious and afraid to repeat that experience again. A single spontaneous abortion does not necessarily mean that the woman or her partner have any problems. Yes it is recommended to wait a bit, at least three months to recover physically and emotionally from the loss, before re-attempting another pregnancy. Every woman and every couple beyond this experience differently. Check with the doctor and if necessary, seek a support group or professional counseling.

Will gradually accept the consolation and the circumstances. And when the doctor prescribes and the couple feel safe and decided, you know that it’s time to try again.

There is an issue neither pleasant nor popular, but loss of pregnancy by a spontaneous abortion is something that concerns you and concerns to any woman who is pregnant or planning a baby. Let’s talk about it to dispel fears and clarify concepts so you can feel much more confident and secure during this wonderful stage is your pregnancy.

What, exactly a spontaneous abortion or involuntary? Called to the loss of pregnancy from natural causes when it occurs in the first 20 weeks of gestation. 10 to 20% of pregnancies end in abortion detected spontaneous. This percentage does not include the loss of fertilized eggs fail to implant properly in the womb, sometimes so early that the woman did not even realize it, and when it starts to bleed think you have a period to be delayed a little or is more abundant than normal.

Your great concern what causes spontaneous abortion? It can happen for many reasons, but a large amount (between 50 and 70% of cases) from those that occur during the first trimester of pregnancy problems are due to genetic or chromosomal abnormalities (on chromosomes) of the fertilized egg, or problems with the development and implantation in the uterus. When women have a spontaneous abortion for the first time, almost never done a full scan (assumed to be due to the above), but even if so, is difficult to determine exactly the cause that produced it. Now when it comes to the six weeks of pregnancy, the likelihood of occurrence of spontaneous abortion are significantly reduced. But care must be taken into account other risk factors. Let’s see them:

1. Age: from 40 years, women are twice as likely to suffer a spontaneous abortion as a 20, and is that with age increase the chances of conceiving a baby with chromosomal irregularities, which are pregnancies more easily lost. The risk increases with each subsequent pregnancy.
2. If the woman has had more than two consecutive spontaneous abortions.
3. Chronic diseases such as poorly controlled diabetes, immune system conditions such as lupus, and hormonal disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome.
4. Family history of birth defects or genetic problems, both on the side of the woman and the father’s side.
5. Bacterial infections (such as listeria) or diseases such as rubella, mumps, measles, etc..
6. Habits like smoking, drinking or using drugs.
7. Use of certain medications (prescription or OTC). It is very important that you communicate to your obstetrician or gynecologist what medicines (or supplements) intakes.
8. Obesity
9. Certain procedures used for diagnosis (eg amniocentesis).
10. If you get pregnant within 3 months after giving birth, you have more risk of spontaneous abortion.

Usually, when approaching the time of delivery, the baby settles inside the womb in a comfortable position for birth. But sometimes, this does not happen. What, then, if the baby is not positioned head down, ready for it come out first during delivery? What if your baby has the wrong position at the time of delivery? What are these positions? In Life and Health give you more information.

As we approach the time of delivery, the baby, like the mother, is being prepared for the moment. His body is fully developed and only need to be located in the most comfortable position for birth. This is head down, looking back as the mother, and is known as fetal position.

This happens about 3 or 4 weeks before the expected date of childbirth or delivery. However, sometimes it may not be placed in that position but for example, stand with your feet down. This is called breech position. In fact, the baby can be placed in varied positions:

- Cephalic presentation. This is the normal case for more than 95% of deliveries. When the head comes first, ideally bent toward the chest so that the crown comes first baby. Sometimes there may be a face presentation: with the head down but facing forward. This can be prolonged and difficult labor. With medical supervision, you could try to rotate the baby by putting on all fours with your bottom raised. The doctor may also try to accommodate the baby through some form of release, but if you do not work, you may need a cesarean.
- Transverse, or shoulders pierced in the abdomen, horizontal, back downward, like looking up. In this case, the doctor may try to manually move the position of head, but usually needs a cesarean section.

In breech presentations there are several types:
- Complete breech: with the buttocks and down legs crossed.
- Butt frank: down with the buttocks and feet towards the head.
- Incomplete breech: buttocks down with one foot up and the other bent.
- Breech presentation: buttocks down with one foot to the pelvis and the other bent.

In any of these presentations of buttock down, if the time of delivery and the baby has not changed its presentation, the doctor may try to manually, using what is known as a method of release. These versions include:
- External version: when the doctor presses the outside of the mother’s abdomen to move the baby. This method is viable in normal pregnancies but not all, for example, when the mother is bleeding vaginally if the baby is too small or your heart rate is abnormal, or if it is a multiple pregnancy.
- Internal version: when the doctor inserts his hand through the vagina and cervix and moves the baby from within.

If none of these attempts is successful, you will need a cesarean.

No one knows with certainty the cause of breech presentation, but is more likely to happen in certain situations. Among them:
- When the mother has had more than one pregnancy.
- If the mother is pregnant with twins or more babies.
- When the amniotic fluid that is surrounding the fetus in utero, there is little or excessive.
- If the uterus does not have a normal or contains lumps (tumors, masses) abnormalities like fibroids.
- When producing what is known as placenta praevia, ie the placenta covers the entrance of the uterus, either completely or partially.
- If the baby is born prematurely (before 37 weeks of gestation).

Most breech babies are born healthy. However, it continues to be a special situation and may at delivery decisions must be made to avoid complications.

If it is near the time of labor and delivery and your baby has not settled into a fetal position, talk to your doctor about this situation for me to explain what might happen, what are the risks for you and your baby and what is the safest thing for both, so that together you can plan the most convenient delivery to your particular case.

The normal gestation period in humans lasts about 40 weeks and a birth is considered premature if born before 37 weeks of gestation. Preterm birth entails a great risk to the baby, a risk that increases the shorter the period of gestation: reduced weight, immature body systems, particularly the respiratory risk of cerebral hemorrhage, health problems and long-term in some cases even death. No wonder, premature delivery is a priority for the scientific community. One of its many causes, a very short cervix, can be controlled by applying a gel, very good news for pregnant women with this type of abnormality.

Since the woman knows she is pregnant, looks forward to the baby. Want to get your baby all right. When babies start arriving early the risks and what was intended to be a happy event can be complicated. In the U.S. alone, according to the latest available statistics of 2010, approximately 8% to 12% of births (1 in 8 babies) are premature. Globally, using multiple regression models specific to 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that worldwide, premature births are on average 9.6% mostly in developing countries: 85% Africa and Asia, 7% in the Caribbean and Latin America and the minority in developed countries, 4% in Europe and North America excluding Mexico.

Because of the enormous cost to human and social level involving the consequences and sequelae of preterm birth, avoiding them is a health priority in all countries. And, apparently, in some cases it can be done easily, safely and economically.

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), in collaboration with scientists from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (both U.S.), confirm that the application of a vaginal gel for hormone Natural progesterone decreases the risk of giving birth prematurely in women at high risk, such as those with short cervix.

When the cervix (or matrix) is softer and weaker than usual, or abnormally short from the beginning, may be erased and expand in the second or third trimester of pregnancy, causing premature labor.

So far the WHO itself (World Health Organization), recognized precisely that prenatal administration of progesterone, regardless of the route and dose, apparently reduces the risk of premature births and babies with low birth weight. However, the same organization recommended caution when administering the treatment, not known whether the prolongation of gestation derived in better outcomes for mothers and their newborns.

Finally, a new study confirms the safety and efficacy of treatment, published in a recent issue of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The study was conducted at 44 medical centers throughout the world (Asia, Africa, Europe, U.S. and Latin America) and involved 458 women who underwent transvaginal ultrasound to measure the length of your cervix.

All participants had the short (10 to 20 mm) and had no symptoms. The split into two groups: one receiving progesterone vaginal gel and one that received a placebo solution between weeks 19 and 23 of gestation. The results show that preterm birth before 33 weeks gestation was reduced by 45% among women using the hormonal gel. In addition, infants of mothers who received hormone therapy had fewer respiratory complications than children of pregnant women who were given placebo.

These results are very positive because it is a treatment without side effects and reduced to about half of preterm births in pregnant women with short cervix. It is definitely good news for pregnant women who are at high risk for the medical community and health authorities. It’s wonderful to have a simple and safe treatment that can help prevent premature birth, one of the problems that have consequences for the newborn, for their families and society in general, the high cost that requires attention short and long term.

In addition, survey data also reveal that births before 28 weeks’ gestation were 5% in the group of mothers assigned to progesterone compared with 10% of births in those who received the inactive substance. After week 35, the figures were 14% and 23% respectively.

These results may encourage obstetricians to incorporate cervical measurement as a routine test during pregnancy. Pregnant women with short cervix can be identified by routine ultrasound midway through the third quarter. So then this treatment may reduce the frequency of preterm birth and improve neonatal outcome. This can be done safely and comfortably.

Currently, measurement of the cervix is not a systematic test is performed in pregnant women, but this research opens the door for possible implementation, and for the start of studies that evaluate the usefulness of this test in women who have already given birth prematurely on previous occasions.

A baby born prematurely is a baby who has not developed well their organs to be outside the uterus. Therefore, a premature birth is a risk factor that should be avoided. Here you tell your doctor what you can do and what you can do if the contractions come sooner than expected.

We today focus on telling you what to do if your doctor detects that you are starting labor prematurely. This is what can be done to extend or prolong the pregnancy:

- Administer medications: If a pregnant woman experiences contractions before 34 weeks of gestation (thereafter the risk of complications is low), the doctor will look at the cervix and will closely monitor the contractions. If they are frequent, then take the necessary measures to prevent progress. In that case can be given steroids to accelerate the development of the baby and prevent complications caused by the immaturity of the brain and the baby’s lungs. Remember that the baby born prematurely may have health problems because their bodies do not have time to develop well.

A group of medications called tocolytics, which are used to stop uterine contractions and allow the pregnancy to run its course. Magnesium sulfate is also given to stop contractions of the uterine muscles and allow the child is in the uterus as possible. It is usually injected into the arm.

In addition, women who are at risk of preterm delivery, can use a belt to monitor the contractions from the comfort of your home. At the time of contraction, press a button and this information is transmitted to your doctor. This device is only to diagnose, and if the doctor finds that self is starting labor by the frequency and intensity of contractions, she should go to him immediately.

Although there are some risk factors for preterm birth, may also occur in women whose pregnancies were normal and safe. It is therefore important that if you are pregnant and you are under 37 weeks, you are attentive to the contractions of your uterus. If you have 4 or more contractions in 20 minutes or 8 in an hour, you can:
- Take 2 or 3 glasses of water or juice (because dehydration can cause contractions)
- Lie down on your left side for at least one hour
- Empty your bladder

If your symptoms worsen during that time, call your doctor or go to the hospital. They take action on them to protect your health and your baby.

Parenting a teen raises many questions. It is a stage where it is easy to lose control of what your children do. One of the biggest fears of parents of teenagers is related to the use and abuse of alcohol and drugs. Here I tell you what you can do to identify the problem and act in time before they become an addiction.

Adolescence is synonymous with experimentation. In part, because it is the stage when young people feel adults without even so, and this opens the door to many things they could not do before because they are children. And partly, because adolescence is a kind of cry for independence from parents.

But it is precisely during these years, that the pressure to use drugs and alcohol is at its maximum level. The parties, friends, all are factors. Some recent research indicates that 27% of teens abuse drugs and alcohol each month. The list includes: marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, alcohol and prescription drugs or OTC. But beyond its use and abuse, the problem is that many teens do not realize that this can bring serious consequences to their health and welfare, as these substances create dependency.

What is the role of parents? Identify the problem. It’s a good idea to take note of the following warning signs:
- If you find traces of drinking or using drugs in his room
- If you realize that some of the counter medicines you have at home are disappearing
- If your son/daughter asks for more money than necessary, lie or steal money from your wallet
- If it is isolated and does not share with the family
- If you lose interest in activities once seemed interesting
- If you realize that their academic performance in school is no longer the same
- If walking with friends in which you do not trust

Do not be afraid to ask questions. Although adolescents tend to be closed with their parents than if they have a problem of drug abuse or alcohol, do not give up. Find a time not to discuss, but a quiet moment and explain that you are concerned about their behavior and abuse of substances of this type has very serious consequences that end up isolating him from friends and family.

Explain that dependence means that need to be drunk or on drugs to have fun and get out of this addiction can be difficult. Motívalo to share with you the reasons for using drugs and alcohol. Perhaps you realize that pressure is due to the environment or any emotional problems.

Set limits: and do not give money without knowing exactly how and when to use, hides the-counter medications in your home, check your room (although this will cost a discussion), although it is invading their privacy is necessary if is for their health and wellbeing.

Finding the cause is the primary tool to seek help. Also important:
- You to learn: it is necessary to learn more about the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse to share this with your son/daughter to and not let the myths about it are filed out of this problem or to seek help (either in detoxification or rehabilitation).
- You seek professional help: It is necessary for the detoxification process, if necessary, and to overcome the addiction. Even if you have your son / daughter does not suffer from teenage addiction, professional help (psychologist or psychiatrist) can be valuable to prevent it reaches that point.
- Motives which your child to seek support from family or a specialized group and accompany him in the process. Overcome the problem of alcohol and drugs during adolescence can be a major challenge for your son/daughter, so, support is crucial.

Love and understanding are essential ingredients when it comes to help an adolescent overcome an addiction or a substance abuse problem that can lead to dependence. Be patient and support your son/daughter at this point that while it may be difficult, it can certainly be overcome. Do not give up!

Children love to run and play in every corner of the house, but not always sure. Stairs, for example, may be a risk for them, especially for children, and are responsible for many of the accidents that occur at home. Here we tell you more details on this and how to make your stairs are not a danger to your children.

Incredibly, the children can be faster than the eyes of their parents: just you turn around or you neglect a minute to something unexpected happens and sometimes dangerous. And not have to be naughty to do so. On the contrary, is part of the discovery of the world are doing as they grow, without real awareness of the danger.

It is therefore very important that you help them to avoid the occasions that involve a risk and turn your home into a safe place. For example, one of the places that can be hazardous to your children, on all who are preschool age, are the stairs.

Given this fact, a group of researchers from the Centre for Research and Policy at Children’s Hospital Injury Columbus, United States, wanted updated information to share with parents and create new strategies to prevent accidents home.

This analyzed government data from about one hundred hospitals in the country. Calculated the number of visits to emergency rooms due to injuries related to stairs and found that from 1999 to 2008, more than 931 000 children came to the centers with injuries on the stairs, of which about three-quarters were in the head and neck.

In addition, almost three percent of injured children were hospitalized, and the funny thing is that, as these results were published in the March online edition of the journal Pediatrics, the majority of accidents that occurred in the stairs where the children needed to stay in the hospital, came when his parents carried.

According to the report, children injured while being carried in arms were three times more likely to require hospitalization. It is therefore very important that exposes you to a hand if you climb the stairs with your child in his arms or better, if you can, leave it in his crib or in a safe place while you raise or lower the stairs.

Although this analysis only assesses the situation in the U.S., home security is a concern for parents and mothers around the world. So, here are some recommendations for the steps to become a child-proof:
1. Always place a protective door or screen so that your children can not accidentally fall down the stairs.
2. Keep children away from stairs and do not let them play there, even when you’re watching closely.
3. Check that no toys or other objects lying on the steps.
4. Do not raise your kids or go down the stairs with a stroller.
5. Do not let children use walkers with wheels that can roll them down the stairs out of control.
6. If you were to move to a house with stairs (or already have one), controls that are built in such a way that allows you to add a child safety door and has a handrail where you can easily grasp.

Taking into account these details, you can avoid accidents on stairs in your own home. Follow these recommendations and do not neglect a second. Everyone involved in the care of your children you should be aware of these tips and follow them. Finally, remember that if you stumble with your child in his arms, injuries are usually more dangerous. Going up or down stairs, holds well your child with one arm and the other, you also protect yourself firmly grabbing the handrail either at home or elsewhere.

Sometimes also recommended to add fiber foods, for example.
6. Other diseases, like diabetes, hypertension or heart problems. The dietitian will be part of the medical team that helps you manage your condition, balancing your meals without sacrificing variety or the palate, but watching the consumption of fat, sugar or sodium for example.

Gestational diabetes means that your doctor found that your blood sugar (glucose) is above the levels considered normal. This is important because if left untreated can affect the health of your unborn baby. Although this will surely have worried, I have two good news. First, fortunately there are ways to control and second sugar levels tend to return to normal after delivery. Most women with gestational diabetes have no symptoms, although some may notice that they have increased thirst, or going to the bathroom to urinate more often (although that happens to many pregnant women).

You obstetrician will teach how chequearte sugar (with a drop of blood from a finger) at home. This monitoring is very important because if you do not know what is your level of blood glucose. We talk about food you should bring. The right choice of foods will also help you avoid gaining too much weight. It also helps control diabetes.

Your doctor will also talk to you about physical activity that can and should perform regularly. Exercise helps by making the insulin it makes your body more efficiently. And finally, if diet and exercise are not sufficient to maintain glucose levels within normal limits, will recommend whether a medicine taken or injected (insulin). Often your doctor works with a team (a registered dietitian and a nurse) who are your allies to understand and achieve your goal.

It is very important to follow all directions because poorly controlled diabetes during pregnancy can cause complications to your baby. For example, as your baby could be a large baby (which is what is known as macrosomia), this causes problems during labor or cesarean section is required, may have low blood sugar at birth (hypoglycemia) or even convulsions; respiratory problems, developmental problems (either moving or care), jaundice (yellowing of the skin) and increased risk of developing obesity and type 2 diabetes.

As for you, your risk of urinary tract infections (of urine) or pre-eclampsia (raised blood pressure and protein in the urine in the second half of pregnancy) are higher compared with other pregnant women as well as your risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future. But most moms with gestational diabetes in care during their pregnancies have no problems and give birth to healthy babies. I wish you luck!
