A new study at the Institute of Cellular Physiology, UNAM (Mexico) on the initiation and progression of cancer, which can be found in the ‘envelope’ of DNA in a structure called chromatin.

After seven years of research it was discovered that DNA is not naked inside the nucleus of cells, is involved in chromatin, a structure whose function is as a link that contains genetic information. If the league is compact and focused, you can not read the DNA, but if you relax and stretch it can be read.
The scientist Felix Recillas Targa and his team found that changes in chromatin structure resulting in not express proteins that regulate the activation of two tumor suppressor genes in humans, called p53 and Retinoblastoma.
Not suppressor genes turned on, it opens the way to cancer, although there is no genetic mutation, explained.
He said that in the study of this disease are generally thought that by mutating a gene acquires a defect, but if you can not open or close properly over deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), you get the product of this gene and will develop cancer.
‘That’s what we inquire: defects that lead to various diseases, including cancer, birth defects occur without’ he explained.
In addition to understanding in depth how genetic information is expressed, the Targa will research Recillas future applications, by proposing new strategies for diagnosis and treatment of specific cancers, much more directed and efficient of which there so far.
