Colorectal cancer is responsible each year in France for 17,000 deaths per 37 000 new cases. This is the third most common cancer in terms of frequency, the second for mortality.
If the treatments have greatly increased, their effectiveness depends largely on early diagnosis of these tumors. But still 40% of these diagnoses are made when there are already metastases.
I insist a little on the subject at this time because the Inca and the Ministry of Health jointly launched a campaign to encourage people aged 50-74 to get tested.
Some reminders about this cancer:
* Tobacco, alcohol, obesity, physical inactivity and high-calorie diet rich in meat promote the occurrence of this cancer.
* Only 3% of cases are due to a genetic disease.
* In 17% of cases, colorectal cancer in a first degree relative indicates a familial predisposition that increases the risk by two. But 80% of cancers are isolated.
To see a real decline in mortality, should preferences on the idea that at least 50% of 50-74 years are tested. And that’s where the rub: the turnout is above 50% in only two departments, and almost everywhere else only to exceed 40%.
Admittedly, the practicalities of fecal occult blood test, which requires manipulating a bit of feces, explain this particularly poor return.
Membership of GPs remains as shy. Note that the Hemoccult gives 50% false positives and its reading can be performed by experienced centers.
Note nonetheless that when the disease is diagnosed at an early stage, the 5-year survival is 94%: the numbers speak for themselves for screening.
