Security
The Food and Drug Administration U.S. (FDA) does not regulate herbs and supplements strictly. There is no guarantee of strength, purity or safety of products, and effects may vary. Always read product labels. If you have a medical condition or are taking other drugs, herbs or supplements, you should consult with a qualified healthcare provider before starting a new therapy. Consult a doctor immediately if you experience side effects.
Allergies
Use cautiously if allergic or hypersensitive to chondroitin sulfate products. Should be used with caution in patients are allergic to shellfish because of the possibility of an allergic reaction. Have been reported urticaria, rash, skin sensitivity to sunlight and worsening of previously well-controlled asthma.
Side Effects and Warnings
It appears that chondroitin sulfate is well tolerated for up to three years.
Adverse effects have been reported rarely and in theory include: headache, restlessness motror, euphoria, hives, rashes, sensitivity to light, hair loss, breathing difficulties, subjective tightness throat and chest, exacerbation of asthma that was previously controlled, chest pain, high blood pressure, lower limb edema, pain/gastrointestinal dyspepsia, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, transaminitis, increased risk of bleeding (theoretical), bone marrow suppression (animal research) and edema of the eyelids.
Avoid in individuals with prostate cancer or at high risk because they may occur or increase in the spread of prostate cancer recurrence.
Pregnancy and lactation
Pregnant women with newborns or infants should avoid the use of chondroitin because of ignorance of the possible effects as there is a structural similarity to heparin, a blood thinner contraindicated during pregnancy.
